COMMERCIAL CARPET BACKING OPTIONS
Quality carpet backing for the right commercial setting.
A carpet tile’s backing is critical to its performance throughout its lifetime. A quality carpet tile with backing will maintain its durability and retain its appearance. The right carpet backing will not only ensure the carpet tile remains dimensionally stable and flat on the floor, it can also provide acoustic, insulation and sustainability benefits. This is due to its construction as primary backing is compiled with several supportive layers making it suitable for a range of high traffic areas.
As part of Milliken’s offering, we manufacture high-quality commercial carpet tiles, that are designed for use in a variety of environments across the office sector as well as hospitality and education environments. In order to tailor your carpet for longevity within your space, different carpet backing options should be considered to ensure the life of your carpet as well as provide the best acoustic properties and comfort within your budget.

FAQs
What is carpet backing?
Carpet backing is best described as the underside of a carpet tile. It’s designed to make the carpet more durable adding strength and stability, and it also secures the tufts of carpet together. Carpet backing normally consists of several layers combined; including primary backing, which acts as the foundation to hold the yarn in place and secondary backing layers which provide extra strength and comfort amongst other properties for best performance.
What is secondary backing on carpets?
Secondary backing is a second layer alongside the primary backing on the underside of a carpet tile. Secondary backing acts as extra support for your carpet, ensuring longevity in busy commercial areas. Milliken carpets offer several layers of backing, providing premium support for sound insulation and acoustics in offices, hotels and open-plan commercial settings.
What are the different types of carpet backing?
There are different types of carpet backing for different needs. Standard hard backing for carpet tiles for areas where comfort is not the main consideration and cushion backing for commercial carpets; an option that provides extra comfort for office workers, visitors and guests alike. Milliken’s hardback option, Function Plus™ is made with several backing layers including; hardbacking and latex to lock the carpet tufts as well a layer of felt backing as the foundation. Whilst Milliken’s cushioned backed options Comfort Lite and Comfort Plus® have additional thick layers of recycled and premium cushion for that extra soft footing, which adds to a desirable guest experience in hotels, casinos and more.
What is the best type of carpet backing?
The best type of carpet backing depends on your personal specifications. In cases where there is a requirement for additional performance characteristics, such as design projects then premium cushion backing is ideal. Milliken’s premium Comfort Plus® backing offers luxurious underfoot, superior acoustic performance and sustainability benefits as it’s made with 90% recycled cushion.
